THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

Which important events have their anniversaries in September?

1. 1st September 1939, WW2 began when Hitler invaded Poland, this caused Britain and France to issue an ultimatum telling him to withdraw or they would declare war.

2. 2nd September 1666, The Great Fire of London started in a bakery in Pudding Lane. It lasted 3 days.

3. 3rd September 1939, Britain and France declared war on Germany bringing both into WW2.

4. 11th September 2001, the Twin towers were hit by two planes in the worst terrorist attack on the US mainland.

5. 15th September 1916, tanks were used for the first time during WW1 at the Battle of the Somme.


Important anniversaries in October

1. 1st October 1908, the Ford Model T went on sale. The first mass produced and affordable car.

2. 1st October 1949, The People's Republic of China set up as a Communist state under Mao Tse Tung.

3. 2nd October 1869, Mahatma Gandhi was born.

4. 3rd October 1990, Germany was reunited as one country after 45 years of being divided into East and West.

5. 4th October 1957, the space age began as the USSR launched the first satellite into orbit. It was named Sputnik I. It sparked the space race between the USSR and the USA, in which both countries competed to be the first to put men in space and on the moon.

6. 12th October 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas discovering the "New World", whilst trying to find a route west from Europe to India.

7. 14th October 1066, the Battle of Hastings took place. King Harold lost and the Norman invader, William, became king.

8. 16th October 1793, the French queen, Marie Antoinette, was beheaded.

9. 24th October 1945, the United Nations Organisation was founded.

10. 29th October 1929, the US stock market crashed. This caused the Great Depression which had serious repercussions throughout the world. It helped bring Hitler to power in Germany.
